We met through mutual friends. We immediately hit it off. In the image below Richard is the old guy on the left. Gail is the old guy on the right. We had a common desire to write a screenplay. During pandemic isolation we started learning more about turquoise. We both have Southwest turquoise jewelry, but never paid that much attention to the turquoise cabochons (stones) used in the pieces. We do now.
Turquoise has a unique place in the gem hierarchy. For centuries it has been - and still is - held sacred by people from all over the world. The turquoise market is no longer dominated by the highest quality stones from Southwest US turquoise mines. Most of these mines are closed and only a handful still produce. Due to most consumers not paying attention to the stones in the jewelry they purchase, other than the "look", the quality and authenticity of the turquoise is often questionable today. It has been fun learning about many of these Southwest turquoise mines. The stories about the miners and their claims are often engaging and sometimes even amusing.
The idea for this story came about after learning about how the Lander Blue Mine Mine (south of Battle Mountain, Nevada) was discovered and the current value of this rare gift from the earth. Lander Blue turquoise was ripe for embellishment and use in this novel.
